MARK MILLER: We travel around the world to run an event called Volaris 101. It’s the opportunity for our most senior leaders to coach leaders across the world across the organization from many different countries, many different vertical market software businesses.
SHERRY MCMENEMY: It’s a very comprehensive program and for some of them, it’s the first time they’ve been exposed to that level of business knowledge.
MARK MILLER: Volaris 101 is almost like a crash course on how to run a software business. All aspects of it, from how you run the sales and marketing, the professional services group, how you oversee R&D, how do you do organic growth, and they learn about areas of the business that they’ve never worked in before.
SHERRY MCMENEMY: We get amazing speakers from across an organization, including key people from Volaris, like CEO Mark Miller.
MARK MILLER: I personally attend all of them. And I believe it’s one of the most important things I do with my time. It keeps you really honest when you get a chance to meet people who are dealing with the real issues. And it’s great for me to hear what they’re doing, and what their challenges are, and see if there’s any person I can connect them with across the organization to help them do better.
SHERRY MCMENEMY: Volaris Group takes a lot of pride in being a learning organization. It’s one of our key values.
MARK MILLER: We really believe that all of our leaders should be learning all the time, and we’re trying to create an environment for them to learn.
SHERRY MCMENEMY: Typically, we will have new leaders who have joined the organization, whether that’s via an acquisition or perhaps they’ve been hired in. Most of our leaders get promoted.
MARK MILLER: Over 80% of the leaders running those businesses are from within one of those businesses. When you’re thinking in the forever time frame, it’s important you focus on leadership development. We’re not trying to sell our businesses over the next five years. We really want to develop our leaders. Our leaders are the ones who are going to help their organizations, listen to their customers, and build products that really matter and make a difference in their customers’ lives.
SHERRY MCMENEMY: One of the things that I’ve heard from people who have just joined Volaris is that this is a really different approach to a learning organization. And what they say is that Volaris 101 is really a good starting point for them to engage fully in their own development, in the development of a company, and really build out those peer networks. So they become contributors to our knowledge as well as receivers of our knowledge.
MARK MILLER: We’d love to help you improve as a leader. And we’d love also to learn from you.
